DDP vs DAP shipping from China to the UK: costs and responsibilities

Blog 2026-10-17

For a UK business buying from China, DDP vs DAP shipping determines who arranges import clearance and bears the applicable import duties and taxes under the sales contract. Under DDP, these obligations sit with the seller; under DAP, they sit with the buyer. Both require delivery to the agreed named place, ready for unloading. DDU still appears in quotations, but it is not an Incoterms® 2020 rule and needs clarification. This guide covers ordinary commercial imports into Great Britain—England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland requires a separate customs and VAT assessment.

DDP vs DAP shipping: the responsibility comparison

Start with the sale between your business and the supplier. The table summarises the standard Incoterms® 2020 allocation; record any agreed changes explicitly.

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to view all columns.

Standard allocation under Incoterms® 2020
Decision DDP: Delivered Duty Paid DAP: Delivered at Place
Transport to the named destination Seller arranges and pays Seller arranges and pays
Export and applicable transit formalities Seller Seller
Import clearance and applicable import duties and taxes Seller Buyer
Normal delivery and risk-transfer point Agreed destination, on the arriving vehicle, ready for unloading Agreed destination, on the arriving vehicle, ready for unloading
Unloading Buyer normally unloads; confirm costs already included in carriage Buyer normally unloads; confirm costs already included in carriage
Insurance for the buyer No automatic seller obligation No automatic seller obligation

The normal delivery point does not remove exceptions associated with a party failing to meet its obligations. In particular, DAP places import-clearance risks with the buyer. Neither term guarantees a delivery date or customs release.

A DDP vs DAP shipping comparison must also distinguish the sales contract from the freight booking. Your supplier’s obligation does not automatically become the forwarder’s obligation. If you buy goods EXW or FCA and separately purchase a service described as “DDP freight”, check both contracts: the freight label alone does not rewrite the supplier’s sale terms.

Why does a supplier still call it DDU?

DDU means Delivered Duty Unpaid, a historical term. British carrier guidance still uses DDU alongside DAP, so it is useful language to recognise. However, DAP is the current rule to assess when the intended arrangement is seller-organised delivery with buyer-managed import clearance.

Do not silently substitute DAP in an existing DDU agreement. Ask which rule and edition the parties intend, where delivery occurs, who manages clearance and who pays duty, import VAT and unloading charges. Confirm the revised wording with your supplier.

For new agreements, write the selected rule, the precise destination and “Incoterms® 2020”. A postcode alone may not identify the receiving bay or handover point. This turns an informal DDU quotation into a defined commercial arrangement rather than assuming the abbreviations are interchangeable.

Compare the complete cost, not the headline freight price

DDP vs DAP shipping does not establish a fixed price difference. A cheaper quote may exclude work included elsewhere, and a seller may incorporate transport and tax costs into the goods price. Compare the same goods, handover, route and destination.

Ask for a written breakdown:

On smaller screens, scroll the table horizontally to view all columns.

Items to check in a comparable quotation
Cost area What to establish before accepting
China collection and preparation Collection point, supplier handover, receiving, consolidation, packing and export handling
International transport Freight basis, surcharges, quote validity and measurements used
UK handling Terminal charges, LCL deconsolidation and onward handling included in the agreed scope
Customs service Who appoints the agent, what service is included and what documents are needed
Duty and import VAT Applicable treatment, whose declaration and tax records are used, and payment or accounting arrangements
Final delivery Exact postcode, appointment, vehicle access and unloading requirements
Conditional costs Examination, storage, demurrage, detention, amendments and failed delivery

Do not treat a DAP quote as automatically excluding every destination handling charge, or a DDP quote as unlimited cover for every exception. Establish the contractual allocation and the booking’s inclusions together. Confirm insurance separately.

Keep two budget views: cash required to complete the shipment, and business cost after any lawful VAT recovery. PVA may change the cash timing of import VAT; it does not reduce the underlying freight price or customs duty.

For sea freight, use the LCL vs FCL buyer’s guide to compare container arrangements separately. Sharing container space does not decide whether the seller or buyer handles import clearance.

Agree the importer and records before dispatch

In DDP vs DAP shipping, naming the party paying a charge is not enough. Identify the importer, the delivery recipient and the customs representative: they can be different parties.

Before the agent submits the declaration, establish:

  • Whose name and EORI will be used, with VAT details where applicable.
  • Who authorises the agent and whether representation is direct or indirect.
  • Who supplies the product description, commodity code, origin and valuation evidence.
  • Who receives the declaration records and relevant VAT evidence.
  • Who answers customs queries and approves additional expenditure.

A business importing into Great Britain generally needs a GB EORI. EORI and VAT registration serve different purposes; do not treat a VAT number as a universal prerequisite for every import. Product-specific licences and compliance requirements need their own check.

DDP does not mean the buyer can ignore inaccurate descriptions or invented values. The buyer must provide required assistance, and appointing a customs agent does not remove the appointing business’s due-diligence responsibilities. Equally, do not assume Yunxi Freight becomes the importer simply because it coordinates transport.

Where PVA fits

Postponed VAT accounting allows eligible UK VAT-registered businesses to account for import VAT on their VAT Return rather than paying it upfront at import. Normal VAT recovery rules still apply. Relevant conditions include business use, the right to dispose of the goods and correct declaration details.

DDP vs DAP shipping does not determine PVA eligibility. If someone imports on your behalf, written PVA instructions must be in place before the declaration. Where a supplier arranges that service, agree the VAT treatment with the supplier too. Retain the relevant import records and statements. Low-value consignments and certain procedures have different rules.

Yunxi Freight can coordinate shipment documents and customs preparation for an eligible arrangement. This does not imply VAT registration, accountancy or a guarantee of recovery. The China to UK shipping FAQs cover the wider questions.

Discuss my import arrangements

Choose around your business’s ability to manage the import

For DDP vs DAP shipping, the practical question is who can lawfully organise the import and maintain usable records—not simply who wants fewer invoices.

Consider DDP when the supplier can support a lawful destination import arrangement and you want the seller to arrange delivery and import formalities. Verify the importer, tax evidence, exclusions and receiving conditions before accepting an inclusive price. A first shipment still needs accurate information and buyer cooperation.

Consider DAP when your business wants to appoint its own customs agent, give declaration instructions and manage import charges. You do not need an in-house customs department: an appointed representative can perform agreed work, while your business retains its applicable responsibilities.

For Amazon UK FBA, organise import and tax responsibilities separately from the fulfilment-centre address. DAP can form part of a workable plan if the buyer arranges clearance and onward handover properly; a warehouse address is not a substitute for that arrangement. Use current Seller Central instructions for labels, destinations and appointments. Delivery evidence and stock becoming available for sale are separate milestones.

For a 3PL or business warehouse, check receiving references and unloading resources. For a residential delivery, specify the handover point and any additional handling. Neither DDP nor DAP automatically includes carrying goods indoors or installation.

Give the supplier a preparation brief before paying or booking

Once the DDP vs DAP shipping responsibilities are agreed, turn them into instructions your supplier and receiving team can follow:

  1. Identify the order. Match products and quantities across the purchase order, commercial invoice and packing list. Obtain clear descriptions, materials, intended uses and origin information.
  2. Measure the finished packing. Record carton or pallet counts, packed dimensions, gross weights, stackability and handling needs. Include protective packaging.
  3. Confirm the handover. State collection or warehouse delivery instructions, references and the actual cargo-ready date. Do not send goods to an unconfirmed warehouse address.
  4. Allocate document tasks. Give the supplier deadlines for the invoice, packing list and any required product evidence; identify who checks them before dispatch.
  5. Confirm UK receiving. Record the full address, appointment requirements, access, equipment and unloading responsibility.

If several suppliers are involved, agree a cut-off and who decides whether to wait or split the order. Include extra storage and handling in that decision. The China to UK sailing schedule supports planning; listed ETD and ETA dates do not confirm space, customs release or doorstep delivery.

The About Yunxi Freight page explains the company’s China collection, consolidation and UK operating resources. For your shipment, the accepted goods and written scope establish the services agreed.

Frequently asked questions

Is DDU still a current Incoterms rule?

No. DDU is not included in Incoterms® 2020. You may still see it in carrier wording or older agreements. Clarify the intended obligations and edition rather than assuming every DDU quote means DAP.

Does DDP vs DAP shipping change the duty rate?

The trade term alone does not set the tariff rate. Classification, origin and applicable customs measures matter. The commercial term changes the allocation of import obligations; customs valuation must still follow the relevant rules.

Does DDP always include cargo insurance?

No. DDP does not require the seller to arrange insurance for the buyer. Confirm whether cover has been purchased, its insured value, exclusions and claim requirements. The seller’s transport risk and an insurance policy are separate matters.

Can a VAT-registered buyer use PVA if the supplier arranges delivery?

Potentially, subject to HMRC conditions and the actual import arrangement. Agree the intended VAT treatment and written instructions before declaration. Supplier-organised transport alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee VAT recovery.

Is DDP always faster than DAP?

No. The abbreviation does not determine sailing speed, examination selection or release time. Complete documents, timely clearance instructions and a workable receiving plan matter under either arrangement.

Prepare a comparison your team can approve

Your DDP vs DAP shipping decision should leave the supplier, finance team and receiving site working from the same record: named delivery point, comparable costs, importer and agent, VAT treatment, documents and unloading arrangements.

Yunxi Freight can help coordinate collection, international transport, customs preparation and agreed UK delivery. Send the product details, value, packed measurements, supplier locations and ready dates, UK postcode, proposed trade term and available importer information. Identify unresolved responsibilities so they can be reviewed before booking.

Share those details for a quotation reflecting the cargo and delivery arrangements you intend to use.
