Oversized Freight Packaging: China to UK Requirements

Blog 2026-10-21

Oversized freight packaging must protect the goods, support safe handling and meet the receiving conditions for the shipment. For Yunxi Freight’s China-to-UK oversized channel, this includes specified timber thicknesses, forklift feet, reinforcement and identification. Regulated solid wood packaging must also meet the applicable plant-health requirements.

This guide gives UK importers, purchasing teams and suppliers a packing checklist to agree before goods leave the factory. The figures below are Yunxi’s channel requirements or recommendations, as indicated; they are not universal UK legal limits. The wood-packaging regulatory section covers Great Britain—England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland requires a separate route and regulatory check.

Share product photographs, provisional packed measurements, actual unit weights and the UK delivery postcode for an initial assessment.

Agree the packing before your supplier dispatches

Yunxi Freight coordinates preparation in China with the agreed UK handover. Oversized freight packaging should therefore be checked against the complete journey, including warehouse handling, loading and unloading—not just the factory’s ability to put the goods on a lorry.

Provide the finished length, width, height and gross weight of each handling unit, photographs of the base and internal restraint, the centre of gravity, stackability and the receiving-site conditions. Identify fragile parts and any restrictions on tilting or lifting. Where measurements are provisional, say so and replace them after packing.

Use oversized freight shipping China to UK to discuss the transport scope. Packing suitability and cargo acceptance must be assessed for the actual order.

Wooden crate and timber-frame specifications

The following oversized freight packaging specifications apply to the relevant China-to-UK channel. Thickness alone does not establish load capacity: the timber, connections, support spans and cargo restraint must work together.

Component Channel requirement or recommendation
Timber base board Minimum thickness: 15 mm
Side panels Minimum thickness: 8 mm; reinforcing timber strips are recommended
Internal cross-members or longitudinal members securing the case Minimum thickness: 20 mm
Top cover Minimum thickness: 11 mm; thicker material and additional supporting members are recommended for exceptionally large goods
Timber strips for open-frame packing Recommended width: at least 80 mm; recommended thickness: at least 15 mm
Forklift feet beneath a timber-frame base Minimum height: 100 mm
Case or frame separate from its supporting base Connect and reinforce the sections to form a stable unit

These are starting specifications for assessment, not permission to omit additional bracing where the load needs it. A heavy machine with concentrated loads may require a different structural arrangement from a similarly sized furniture shipment.

Add top load-bearing cross-beams to timber frames

All timber-frame packages must have load-bearing cross-beams at the top. The channel guidance recommends spacing them no more than 200 mm apart to support the intended load.

For oversized freight packaging, a top beam is a structural component; stretch film is not a substitute. Declare whether the finished unit can be stacked and obtain confirmation of the loading arrangement. Adding beams does not automatically make a fragile or non-stackable product suitable for top loading.

Forklift feet, access and long heavy crates

Oversized freight packaging must provide usable forklift access. The channel’s weight thresholds refer to actual unit weight, not volumetric weight.

Cargo condition Required preparation
Actual unit weight over 40 kg, with a footprint exceeding 1,200 × 1,000 mm Fit forklift feet with the specified hinged fittings; foot height must be at least 100 mm
Actual unit weight over 100 kg, and width over 500 mm Fit four-way forklift feet with the specified hinged fittings; foot height must be at least 100 mm
Wooden crate over 2,300 mm long and over 500 kg actual unit weight Add transverse connecting strips between the forklift feet to reinforce the base against movement during handling

The conditions within each row operate together. These are not a blanket rule that every package over 40 kg needs the same base, or that every package below a threshold is automatically acceptable. Send both footprint dimensions for assessment; packages on a threshold or with unusual geometry need confirmation.

A foot height of 100 mm must leave an accessible insertion path. Show any braces, straps or projections that could obstruct the forks, and confirm the lifting position and centre of gravity. Agree the hinged-fitting arrangement before your supplier completes the base.

For long heavy crates, the connecting strips supplement the base; they do not replace adequate feet, load-bearing members or secure attachment of the goods.

Stabilise irregular cargo and flight cases

Irregular goods cannot be received in their unstable form. Oversized freight packaging must be rebuilt or reinforced to provide the required support:

Cargo height Minimum supporting-base width
Up to 1,500 mm 500 mm
Above 1,500 mm 700 mm

These minimum widths do not guarantee stability for every centre of gravity. Secure the cargo against movement and provide photographs showing the finished support.

Flight cases weighing less than 40 kg, within 1,200 × 1,000 mm, may be prepared without forklift feet under the channel guidance. Cases exceeding the stated weight or footprint need forklift feet, the specified hinged fittings and a minimum foot height of 100 mm. Obtain confirmation for exact boundary values.

Where a case has castors, the wheels must be suspended clear of the ground in the prepared arrangement. Alternatively, secure the case to a pallet and stretch-wrap it for dispatch. Oversized freight packaging must restrain the complete case; wheels are not a substitute for a handling base.

Check solid wood packaging for Great Britain

The structural checks for oversized freight packaging are separate from wood-packaging biosecurity. Solid wood crates, pallets, feet and dunnage used for imports into Great Britain must meet the applicable ISPM 15 requirements, including treatment and marking.

Qualifying processed wood, such as plywood, is exempt from these wood-packaging measures. That does not automatically exempt solid timber feet or bracing added to a plywood case. Check the materials throughout the handling unit.

The Forestry Commission states that compliant wood packaging does not need a separate phytosanitary or treatment certificate: certification is provided by the ISPM 15 mark. A certificate cannot replace the required mark. Ask the supplier for clear photographs of applicable marks and check that later repairs or added timber have not introduced non-compliant components.

ISPM 15 compliance does not certify crate strength or guarantee customs release. For Northern Ireland, confirm the applicable requirements for the actual movement before dispatch.

Apply clear shipping marks and receiving labels

Oversized freight packaging must be identifiable when it reaches the receiving warehouse. Obtain the confirmed shipment label or receiving reference before dispatch, or attach clear, legible shipping marks as agreed with Yunxi. Keep them firmly attached and visible after wrapping.

Where weight is unevenly distributed, mark the permitted forklift positions clearly on the outside. Tell the handling team about the heavy end and any lifting restrictions rather than relying on the external shape of the case.

A freight-channel approval does not replace Amazon’s product, preparation or delivery requirements.

Plan the UK unloading before finalising the base

The final oversized freight packaging must be compatible with the equipment and site where it will be received. Ask the consignee about vehicle access, a loading bay or forklift, receiving hours, the unloading area and who will provide any required labour.

For oversized freight delivery UK addresses, confirm the full postcode and handover point. A tail-lift vehicle does not establish that a long or heavy crate can use the platform safely. Tail-lift suitability depends on the complete packed dimensions, weight, equipment and site conditions. Indoor carrying, stairs and installation require a separate agreement.

Complete a supplier handover check

Before dispatch, agree who will check and approve:

  1. Structure: board thicknesses, frame strips, top beams, the base connection and internal restraint.
  2. Handling: forklift feet, hinged fittings where required, accessible fork positions and any long-crate connecting strips.
  3. Stability: supporting-base width, centre of gravity, castors and stackability.
  4. Compliance and identification: wood materials, applicable ISPM 15 marks, shipping marks and destination labels.
  5. Final records: packed measurements, actual gross weights, package quantities, photographs and UK unloading instructions.

Where the order uses China to UK freight consolidation, agree the receiving checks and any packing work before the supplier sends the goods. Receiving a sealed case does not establish that its contents have been counted or its product quality tested.

If repacking changes the measurements, weight or footprint, update the transport information and quotation. Confirm the chargeable basis, additional preparation and handling costs for the selected service rather than assuming one conversion factor or that all remedial work is included.

Frequently asked questions

No. The timber, base and reinforcement figures are operating requirements or recommendations for the relevant Yunxi China-to-UK channel. Wood-packaging plant-health rules and the destination’s receiving requirements apply separately.

Does every unit over 100 kg need four-way forklift feet?

The stated channel rule combines actual unit weight over 100 kg with width over 500 mm. Other cargo still needs assessment for safe handling. Do not treat a narrower package as automatically acceptable without an appropriate base.

Does a plywood crate avoid all ISPM 15 checks?

No. Qualifying plywood is exempt from the wood-packaging measures, but solid wood feet, pallets or bracing may still be regulated. Check the complete unit, including timber added during repairs or reinforcement.

Is 100 mm foot height enough for safe handling?

It is the specified minimum for the relevant base arrangements, not a complete handling assessment. Fork access, structural strength, stability, weight distribution and suitable equipment must also be confirmed.

Can I use the same packing for an FBA warehouse and a residential address?

Only if both receiving arrangements accept it. FBA requires the applicable shipment and preparation instructions; residential delivery requires an agreed access and unloading plan. The same product may need different handling arrangements.

What if my supplier has already packed the goods differently?

Send photographs, unit weights, measurements and the destination before dispatch. Agree whether reinforcement or repacking is needed, who will carry it out and the charges. Update the records after any change.

Send your packing details for a shipment assessment

A workable oversized freight packaging plan gives the supplier clear construction instructions and the receiving team a safe handling arrangement. Send the product description, value and photographs; finished measurements and actual gross weights; base and internal-restraint photographs; material and marking details; stackability; supplier address and ready date; and the full UK delivery address, postcode and unloading facilities.

Yunxi Freight can review the packing information alongside the proposed transport and delivery scope. Confirm the arrangement before releasing the goods from the factory.
