UK Residential Pallet Delivery from China: Kerbside, Tail Lifts and Indoor Access
Blog 2026-11-02
Residential pallet delivery to a UK home does not automatically include carrying goods indoors. Before your supplier ships furniture, equipment or stock from China, agree where the lorry can stop, how each packed unit will be unloaded and where the handover ends. A tail lift moves suitable loads between the vehicle and ground; it does not establish that a pallet can cross gravel, climb steps or fit through a doorway. This guide helps UK importers and home-based businesses prepare cargo details, assess receiving conditions and compare the delivery scope before their supplier dispatches the goods.
This guide covers commercial goods delivered to homes in Great Britain: England, Scotland and Wales. Northern Ireland requires a separate route and regulatory assessment.
Importing furniture, equipment or business stock from China? Start with the packed measurements and delivery postcode.
What does residential pallet delivery include?
Residential pallet delivery should have an agreed handover point, unloading method, receiving contact and any access conditions recorded before dispatch.
A company name at a residential address does not demonstrate that there is a loading bay, forklift or suitable space for a lorry.
Yunxi Freight coordinates China-to-UK shipments around the goods and receiving requirements. Its residential service assessment concerns accepted commercial cargo; it is not a personal removals service. PO boxes, military addresses and offshore island destinations are outside the published scope.
Residential pallet delivery: kerbside, tail lifts and indoor access
For residential pallet delivery, ask what happens at each stage rather than relying on a service label.
| Arrangement | What it describes | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Kerbside delivery | An agreed outdoor handover near the accessible roadside | Safe stopping position, unloading and exact placement |
| Tail-lift unloading | Equipment used to lower a suitable load from the vehicle | Platform dimensions, capacity, load stability and operating conditions |
| Ground-floor indoor delivery | Movement beyond an entrance, where expressly accepted | Doorway dimensions, thresholds, route, people and equipment |
| Room-of-choice delivery | Placement in a specified room under the accepted service | Floor, stairs, turns, handling limits and exclusions |
A kerbside booking should identify an accessible outdoor handover point. Entry into the property, two-person handling and installation need separate confirmation; they should not be inferred from the words ‘residential delivery’.
Unpacking, packaging removal, assembly and installation are separate requests. Even an accepted indoor service should identify which of these tasks, if any, is included.
How to choose the delivery scope
For residential pallet delivery from China to Great Britain, choose the scope by the required handover point, then test the load and access against it. A buyer who can arrange safe onward movement may request an agreed outdoor handover; a buyer who needs goods carried across a threshold or into a room should describe that route before quotation. Kerbside delivery describes an outdoor handover, not an automatic promise to move goods into a garage or room. Pallet trucks need suitable ground conditions, so disclose gravel, grass, slopes and uneven surfaces before agreeing the delivery method. Service names and handling limits vary: check the quotation for the actual endpoint, equipment and included work. Record the packed dimensions, gross weight and access requirements before instructing the supplier to dispatch.
| Your requirement | Decision before dispatch |
|---|---|
| Goods can be received outdoors | Confirm the kerbside or other accepted outdoor position, unloading and onward handling |
| Goods must enter a room | Submit the complete route and request explicit acceptance of the people, equipment and work |
| Load or site does not suit the proposed method | Revise the equipment, packaging or receiving point and obtain confirmation before release |
Check the load and site for residential pallet delivery
Assess the packed unit and receiving site together. A residential pallet delivery plan can fail even when the quoted weight looks manageable: an overhanging crate, unstable base or unsuitable surface may prevent the proposed unloading method.
Measure each unit for residential pallet delivery
Ask for final dimensions and gross weight for every handling unit, including the pallet, crate, feet, protruding parts and reinforcement. Request photographs of the base, fork-entry points and complete packaging. Identify uneven weight distribution, fragile projections and restrictions on tilting.
Do not select a tail lift from weight alone. Ask the haulier to confirm platform fit, usable capacity and the handling method for the actual load. Confirm the selected service’s limits; another carrier’s figures may not apply.
Long or awkward units need an individual review. The oversized delivery to UK addresses service explains Yunxi's assessment of packed units, vehicle access and unloading resources. Send the crate photographs and handling requirements for a shipment-specific decision.
Photograph the route, not just the house
Show the proposed stopping area and the route to the requested handover point. Include gates, narrow lanes, restricted turning space, slopes, gravel, raised kerbs, thresholds and steps. Measure the narrowest opening if indoor movement is requested.
HSE's workplace transport guidance recommends firm, level loading areas, suitable packaging and advance agreement on unloading. In your receiving brief, identify the stopping area and who supplies and operates the agreed equipment. These planning principles do not constitute approval of a particular domestic site.
Residential pallet delivery checklist before supplier dispatch
Keep the supplier, forwarder and recipient working from one residential pallet delivery record. Use the following checklist before releasing the goods.
| Check | Information to record |
|---|---|
| Cargo | Product description, unit count, final packed dimensions, gross weights and photographs |
| Destination | Full address, postcode, property use and any gate or access instructions |
| Vehicle access | Stopping space, road restrictions, turning area and known height or width limits |
| Unloading | Accepted equipment, responsible operator and whether the recipient must provide resources |
| Handover | Exact agreed position and any separately accepted movement beyond it |
| Receiving | Contact number, availability, booking process and agreed receiving window |
| Changes | Who to contact if packaging, address, availability or access changes |
Complete your residential pallet delivery review before final packaging where possible. If reinforcement changes the unit's dimensions or weight, submit the revised figures before booking.
The wider Business & Residential Shipping service connects supplier collection and international transport with import preparation and the receiving arrangement. Sea, air and road‒rail options depend on the accepted cargo and route; choosing a transport mode does not settle the final unloading question.
Unsure whether the proposed handover works? Share cargo and access photographs before dispatch.
Does DDP include unloading or carrying goods indoors?
DDP does not automatically add indoor handling to residential pallet delivery. Under Incoterms® 2020, DDP and DAP normally provide for delivery at the named destination on the arriving vehicle, ready for unloading. DDP assigns import clearance and applicable import duties and taxes to the seller; DAP assigns them to the buyer.
Check three separate layers:
- Sales contract: the agreed trade term, named place, parties and import responsibilities.
- Transport quotation: the work actually commissioned, including any unloading costs already covered by carriage.
- Receiving plan: who provides the equipment, who operates it and where the physical handover ends.
Your supplier's obligation does not automatically become the forwarder's obligation. Confirm the importer and required information alongside the physical arrangements. The DDP vs DAP shipping guide covers the broader responsibility comparison.
For a residential pallet delivery quotation, obtain clear answers to these questions:
| Quotation item | Answer needed |
|---|---|
| Unloading | Is it included, using which equipment and operator? |
| Indoor movement | Is the requested route accepted and priced? |
| Extra work | Are unpacking, packaging removal or installation included or excluded? |
| Unsuccessful delivery | What terms apply to waiting, storage, a revised booking or redelivery? |
| Changes | What requires reassessment and written quotation approval? |
Compare quotations for the same endpoint and tasks. Check unloading costs already covered by carriage before paying again; identify any conditional charges for this shipment rather than assuming every residential order attracts the same supplement.
Example: a crate, gravel and three steps
A UK home-based business imports a furniture crate measuring 183 × 102 × 112 cm, with a gross weight of 218 kg. The property has no forklift, a gravel drive and three steps to the entrance. The buyer wants the crate placed in a ground-floor room.
The residential pallet delivery decision follows the receiving conditions:
| Assessment result | Next step |
|---|---|
| Equipment suits the crate and an outdoor handover is feasible | Confirm the exact outdoor position and who will arrange movement afterwards |
| The required route crosses gravel or steps | Obtain an accepted onward-handling plan before promising delivery into the room |
| No workable unloading method is established | Revise the receiving point or transport plan before the supplier releases the crate |
The crate's 218 kg weight does not establish tail-lift suitability. Platform fit, base design, stability and the operating area remain part of the assessment. If packaging or the receiving address changes, resubmit the details. Do not leave crate opening, extra labour or the move over the steps for the driver to improvise on arrival.
Frequently asked questions
Can a postcode confirm access for residential pallet delivery?
No. A postcode helps with initial routing and quotation, but it does not describe narrow lanes, turning space, parking restrictions or the unloading area. Provide the full address and site details before vehicle and handover arrangements are confirmed.
Can I redirect the goods to another address after departure?
For residential pallet delivery, request an address change through your logistics contact. The new address may require a revised route, access review, appointment and quotation. Notify the recipient after the change has been accepted rather than treating a message as confirmation.
What if I cannot receive my residential pallet delivery?
Contact the delivery coordinator promptly to establish the available options and applicable terms. Do not assume unattended delivery, indefinite waiting or free redelivery. Make sure any alternative recipient understands the agreed handover and has the necessary authority and resources.
What should I do if the crate arrives damaged or a unit is missing?
Where safe and possible, check the visible packaging and unit count during handover. Record apparent damage or shortages on the applicable delivery record, take photographs and contact your logistics representative promptly under the shipment's reporting procedure. A delivery note annotation does not itself establish claim entitlement.
Can I ask the driver to remove the packaging?
Only rely on packaging removal if it has been expressly accepted. Unloading, indoor placement, unpacking, disposal and installation are different tasks. Follow the agreed handling plan rather than asking for an unassessed change at the vehicle.
Prepare the delivery before the goods leave China
For residential pallet delivery, send the packed cargo information and receiving-site details together. Agree the endpoint, unloading resources and any onward handling, then give the supplier and recipient the same confirmed instructions.
Yunxi's UK last-mile delivery service connects cargo availability, receiving requirements and the agreed final transport stage. Confirm the cargo, receiving point, equipment and additional handling in that plan.
Have the shipment details ready? Use the quote page to request a shipping assessment. If gravel, steps or indoor access need explanation, use Gmail to send the details and add site photographs. State your requested handover point. Any online calculation is a reference estimate; the residential delivery scope requires confirmation.
